MARTINSVILLE, Va. — With just two races remaining in the grueling NASCAR Cup Series season, the math paints a bleak picture for Denny Hamlin. Facing an imposing 73-point deficit, Hamlin’s statistical chances of capturing his elusive first Cup Series championship hover well below the five percent threshold. Yet, racing is rarely dictated by calculators alone, and the veteran Joe Gibbs Racing driver engineered the absolute best possible start to his improbable rescue mission on Saturday, rocketing to the pole position at the historic Martinsville Speedway.
For Hamlin, securing the top spot for Sunday’s showdown at the "Paperclip" is a massive psychological and tactical victory. However, the path forward remains agonizingly narrow. Championship leader Kyle Larson secured the third starting position in qualifying, ensuring that Hamlin will have no easy or immediate opportunities to chunk away at Larson’s commanding lead without extraordinary circumstances.
To pull off what would arguably be one of the greatest comebacks in modern NASCAR history, Hamlin doesn’t just need to win; he needs a minor miracle, a massive stroke of fortune, and a complete reversal of momentum over the final fortnight of the season.
Main Facts: The Battle Lines Drawn at Martinsville
As the Cup Series paddock unpacks its gear at Martinsville Speedway, the stakes could not be higher.
The Deficit: Denny Hamlin trails championship leader Kyle Larson by 73 points with only two races left on the 2024 calendar.
The Qualifying Triumph: Hamlin claimed the pole position during Saturday’s time trials, putting his No. 11 Toyota Camry in prime real estate to chase his seventh coveted Ridgeway Grandfather Clock trophy.
Larson’s Counter: Kyle Larson qualified third, maintaining strong track position and keeping himself directly in the hunt to rack up crucial stage and race points.
The Clinch Scenario: Larson enters the weekend needing just 59 points to mathematically lock up the championship—a feat he could accomplish as early as Sunday, effectively ending the title fight a week early.
The Statistical Reality: Even if Hamlin manages to win both of the remaining races, statistical models suggest he still would only possess a roughly 60 percent probability of overtaking Larson, entirely dependent on how the championship leader fares.
Chronology of the Weekend: Saturday’s Qualifying and the Road to Sunday
The weekend kicked off under crisp autumn skies in Ridgeway, Virginia, with tension palpable throughout the garage.
Saturday Morning Practice and Time Trials
As teams rolled out for practice sessions, the focus immediately shifted to telemetry and single-lap speed. Track position is notoriously paramount at the 0.526-mile paperclip-shaped oval, where passing can turn into a bruising, bumper-to-bumper affair.
Hamlin’s No. 11 crew dialed in their machine brilliantly, allowing the veteran driver to lay down a blistering lap during single-lap qualifying. The pole position was his, sparking rare cheers of optimism from the JGR camp.
Moments later, however, title rival Kyle Larson calmly steered his entry to the third-fastest time in qualifying. Any hope Hamlin might have had for Larson suffering a catastrophic qualifying meltdown was instantly erased. Larson secured a spot on the second row, ensuring he would remain a constant, high-scoring presence at the sharp end of the field from the drop of the green flag.
Supporting Data and Statistical Breakdown
To understand the sheer magnitude of the mountain Hamlin must climb, one must look closely at the points architecture of the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs and the twilight stretch of the season.
The 73-Point Gap: Over a standard two-race stretch, overcoming a 73-point deficit requires an average swing of more than 36 points per weekend—something that is virtually impossible without external DNFs (Did Not Finish) or severe mechanical failures from the leader.
The Phoenix Precedent: Hamlin’s camp has looked back at recent aberrations for inspiration, noting races like Phoenix two weeks prior, where Larson suffered a disastrous outing, scoring zero stage points and tumbling outside the top 25. However, such disasters are outliers for Larson’s consistently lethal Hendrick Motorsports team.
The Homestead Horizon: Looking ahead to next week’s finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Hamlin calculated that it will take utter chaos to close the gap. "You need to gain 25-30 [points] probably to even have a remote feeling of some sort of optimism, and even that is probably a stretch," Hamlin remarked, noting that he will need cars trapped multiple laps down to create any separation.
Official Responses and Driver Perspectives
Speaking to the media after claiming pole position, Hamlin maintained a surprisingly relaxed demeanor, largely because the odds are so heavily stacked against him that the psychological burden of defense has been replaced by the freedom of absolute offense.
"For us personally, it feels good that you don’t have to, okay, we’re going to have to make something happen to have that big point day," Hamlin explained. "We don’t really have to make something happen when you start up front or have track position. It’s on you to just execute at that point.
"We’re ahead of the chains. That’s the best way I can explain it is that you’re not third and eight. This is a third and two situation."
When pressed on how that football analogy translates to next week’s fourth-down-style desperation at Homestead, Hamlin was starkly realistic:
"I mean, truthfully, we’re so far behind. We’re going to have to have help. And so, I think that it would probably come down to how many cars do you think is going to be on the lead lap at Homestead? Is there any opportunity where [they] could be one lap down in 28th and I win and then that’s a possibility?"
On the other side of the paddock, Kyle Larson was the picture of corporate and competitive cool. Unfazed by Hamlin’s pole-winning speed, Larson emphasized consistency and adherence to the processes that brought Hendrick Motorsports to the doorstep of another championship.
"It is tough not to look at that and see what could be done this weekend, but I think what our team does really well is staying focused on what you have to do to prepare a good racecar, have good pit practice, and for myself, studying and being ready for the race," Larson said.
"So, not being too relaxed, but also trying not to put too much pressure on yourself either. I really think that is what has pushed us through The Chase, through the season, and other seasons in the past. Just try to stay true to who we are and go have a good day like we have been having."
Broader Implications for the NASCAR Cup Series
While the championship spotlight burns intensely on the battle between Larson and Hamlin, the ripple effects of Sunday’s race at Martinsville extend across the entire playoff grid.
The Secondary Contenders: Should Larson hit an unforeseen roadblock—whether through a wreck, a mechanical failure, or a pit-road catastrophe—the door instantly swings open not just for Hamlin, but for lurking championship threats like Christopher Bell and Chase Briscoe. Both drivers are positioned to capitalize if the leaders falter.
The Battle for Manufacturer Pride: With Toyota (Hamlin, Bell) and Chevrolet (Larson) locking horns at short tracks, every position on the track carries weight beyond individual driver standings. The engineering departments at Joe Gibbs Racing and Hendrick Motorsports have thrown everything they have into this weekend’s setups.
The Legacy Factor: For Hamlin, adding a seventh grandfather clock at Martinsville would tie a legendary ribbon around his short-track prowess, even if the ultimate season prize slips through his fingers. For Larson, closing out the championship a week early would cement his status as one of the most dominant and complete drivers of the modern NASCAR era.
As the engines roar to life at Martinsville Speedway, the script is written, but the race track remains unpredictable. Hamlin has his dream starting spot, Larson has his points cushion, and the racing world waits to see whether mathematics or miracles will dictate the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series narrative.
